Souper Bowl of Caring
February 5, 2012
Souper Bowl of Caring is a national movement of young people working to fight hunger and poverty in their own communities around the time of the Super Bowl football game. In the weeks leading up to or on Super Bowl Sunday, young people take up a collection (many use a soup pot), asking for one dollar or one item of food for people in need. They give 100% of the donations directly to the local hunger-relief charity of their choice.
The Souper Bowl of Caring began in 1990 with a simple prayer by Reverend Brad Smith of Columbia, SC: "Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat." Since then, it has branched out to include schools, businesses, and congregations of all faiths. Together they have raised more than $50 million in monetary and food donations.
This year, NJE wants to help. We'll be collecting canned soups and other healthy foods in both offices. All Columbus donations will be given to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, and Zanesville items will be going to the Salvation Army. Please contact Amy Higgens at AHiggins@nje.com for more information, or visit their website at www.souperbowl.org.

20th Annual Komen Columbus Race for the Cure
May 19, 2012
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.
Up to 75 percent of the funds raised at the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure remain here in our 30-county service area to provide breast health research, diagnostics, screening, treatment, services and education for uninsured or underinsured women. The remaining 25 percent goes to fund national research to discover the causes of breast cancer and, ultimately, its cures.
Please support Team NJE in the 20th Annual Komen Columbus Race for the Cure, taking place on Saturday, May 19, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Show everyone whose life you are running for! Email Dotty Bailey for more information at DBailey@nje.com or click here to view the team page for NJE.
